1900 SEP 22 : Alice celebrated her birthday on this date. She was born in England. I haven't found her record of birth yet and there are several Alice Lathams to choose from. I hope I can track these down someday. Barnardo's says her step father told them she was born at Southfields (Wandsworth, London) which would be in v.1d.

1909 JUL 14 : Alice's brother William Pallant was born in London. William's birth certificate has not yet been located. In 1914 his father gave William's birthdate as 1908 JUL 14 to Barnardo's as well as 1908 SEP for his mother's death - which we know to be incorrect.

1909 SEP 13 : When Alice was 8 her 29 year old mother died in the Union Infirmary, St. Johns Hill, London, England. Her mother's death certificate indicates the cause of death was Bright's Disease (a kidney problem) - parturition (child birth)

1909 OCT 29 : Not long after her mother's death Alice was admitted to Dr. Barnardo's Girl's Village Home on Horns Road, Barkingside, Ilford, Essex and boarded out at Soham, Cambridge; Isleham, Cambridge and Harrowden, Bedfordshire.

1913 MAR 13 : Alice's brother Edward Latham, age 8, emigrated to Canada, he was boarded out with Mr. Love of Hiawatha, Ontario

1913 SEP 25 : Alice emigrated to Canada when she was 13. She sailed on the Allen Line Steamship Co.'s Royal Mail Steamer "Corinthian" from London with Dr. Barnardo's group of 119 girl domestics with Mrs Lloyd as matron. They were bound for Montreal, Que. and Quebec, Que. There was a stop in Plymouth, England on Sept.26, 1913. They arrived in Quebec at 9 pm on Oct.5th, 1913. Their final destination was Peterborough, Ont. There were also 150 boys with a final destination of Toronto, Ont. From Library and Archives Canada, Reference: RG 76, MicroFHL Call No: T-4805: ship's passenger list, she is on page 13. Number of Souls: Adults: 230, Children: 280. Passengers: Saloon: 0, 2nd Cabin: 147, Steerage: 363. In Fall 1914 this ship was part of the 1st Canadian Troop Convoy.

1913 OCT 05 : Alice arrived in Quebec, destination the Hazelbrae home in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

While working at Woolworth's in Toronto, Alice met Thomas Newbury. They met because his brother married one of the other girls Alice worked with. He used to sing "I found a million dollar baby in the five and ten". Thomas and Alice were married in Toronto on September 22, 1921 - that was Alice's 21st birthday. She was about 2 weeks older than Tom and there was a fair bit of teasing about him being "just a kid". Before they left Toronto they had seven children, George (1922), Raymond (1923), William (1925), Thomas (1927), Shirley (1928), Elizabeth (1930) and Connie (1933).

1933 : The family moves to Kingston, Ontario, Canada

Tom had come ahead first to take a job as a linotype operator at Hanson and Edgar Limited. Hanson and Edgar's was located near the Queen's Inn - Brock Street near Bagot. He lived in a house on University Ave. where a Mrs. Bruton looked after the house for the man who owned it. When the rest of the family arrived they rented a house around the corner on Earl St. - it may have been called the "Stone Jug". When they moved in it was so cold that the pipes had frozen. 1934 : The family moved to Barriefield, Ontario, Canada (Green Bay Point)

After six months Alice and Tom decided it would be better to move the kids to the 'country', which at that time meant "The Point" at Barriefield. Tom could walk to work from there and Alice raised chickens and geese to sell. Their nearest neighbours were Dollar Bill and Duncan Stewart's family. Dollar Bill lived in a steel hanger suitable for water planes. Well known for his bootlegging, he also had a store in there with candy for the kids. Shirley remembers sitting on his couch with a cup of Oxo that he insisted she stir until it was completely dissolved.

1943 : The family moves to a farm near Sydenham, Ontario, Canada

In 1943 they moved to a house owned by Mrs. Rett Brawley somewhere around Harrowsmith/Sydenham. It's hard to imagine today, but the cows had to walk from one farm to the next! This would have been around 20 miles and the path would have been through Kingston. Shirley remembers the farmer across the road helping them burn some brush - it ended up getting out of control and the fence posts burned as well. Mrs Brawley, who lived in part of the house, probably though this was a wild bunch.

1944 : Alice's son George marries in Lewes in East Sussex, England

1946 : Alice's daughters Shirley and Betty leave home to work as housekeeping staff at Kingston General Hospital for the next three years

1947 : The family moves to the farm on Hwy 33, about three miles west of Bath, Ontario, Canada

Alice worked on the farm with Billy and Raymond for many years. There was often a grandchild visiting at the farm in the summertime, sometimes for several weeks at a time. -- this would be a good place to add some stories from you people that have them.

1991 MAR 17 : Alice died in Kingston, she was 90 years old
